Kafka.

Wrote a story called The Penal Colony, about an execution device and a rather lightweight legal system, and a judge who killed himself on said device, after realising he was going to be out of a job soon.

"Be just" was carved into his flesh, as the cranky old machine worked its way into non-existence.

Great story, if a little grim.
