It appears that the essence of Munich is the biergarten. One sits with friends in a lovely atmosphere amidst the chestnut trees, served by ladies who can carry many large beers all at once. (That's 1 litre of beer, people.)I've discovered their secret. Apart from bread, meat and cheese for a fortifying breakfast, and many meat-high dishes throughout the day, in the biergartens most of those massive beers are in fact shandies*.
* Shandy - equal portions of beer and lemonade.
